A BRIEF HISTORY


1989    School Based Management Contract
1990    Mathematics, Science and Technology Magnet Center plan developed
1991    Reconfigured school from grades 7 through 9, to six through eight
1991    Magnet School Program implemented/CPT
1991    Magnet School Proposal submitted
1993    Magnet School opened/ Charter submitted
1994    Became Charter/LEARN School
2003    Received Distinguished School Award from CA Department of Education



CHANGES, GOALS, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 

1.    Sixth grade classes are teamed and cored
2.    New school curriculum/instructional program developed
3.    Science lab program developed and implemented
4.    Technology/computer-use curriculum developed and implemented
5.    Teacher technology training implemented, including IMMEX
6.    Two computer labs established
7.    Two computers in all classrooms
8.    Silent Sustained Reading offered twice weekly to promote reading
9.    In the top three Middle School/Magnet test scores in LAUSD for the past 5 years
10.  Apple Computer Pilot Program Begins in 2008 in each core discipline (English, Math, Science, History) 

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM


1.    Three years of English, social studies, mathematics, science, and PE
2.    Four 10-week Elective classes - Grades 6.
3.    Silent Sustained Reading offered twice weekly
4.    Sixth grade classes organized in central location on campus
5.    All sixth grade classes organized in teams and cores
6.    Common planning time for staff planning and preparation
