      3. Research on the internet. Be sure to choose articles and websites that are of good quality and are unbiased.
      4. Write your paper in essay format with the following formats: Typed and double spaced, 1 inch margins, size 12 Times New Roman font, 200-300 words.
      5. The resources do not count towards the word count. Make sure you include your resources (the URL of the specific page of the website you used) at the end of the paper. For instance:

    • Category 1 - Learning How to Move

      Category 1: Learning How to Move

       

      1. Working on a target area:  Is there a target area on your body that you would like to focus on to help increase your strength, endurance, health, and overall fitness level.  Choose an area of your body that you would like to focus on developing. What are the names of the specific muscles that you need to develop? What exercises do you need to do to develop these muscles? Do some research to help design a fitness plan for this specific area. Your finished report will contain the information that you learned, along with the detailed plan that you have created.

       

      1. Stretching: For many years, athletes have been taught that you must always stretch before you work out to avoid injury. However, some recent research shows that stretching may have little or no benefit at all. In fact, some say that stretching improperly can actually cause you to injure yourself. Do some research and write a report that shows both sides of this issue. End your report by expressing your opinion about this topic.

       

      1. Yoga: Yoga has been around for centuries, but recently, many people have taken up this form of fitness to improve their physical health and reduce stress. What is yoga? What are the benefits of yoga? What kinds of exercises would you do during a yoga session? What equipment (if any) do you need? Where can you learn how to develop your yoga skills? Is yoga a good form of exercise for you? Write a report that answers these questions.

       

      1. Aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise: Depending on the type of exercise that you do, the amount of time that you exercise, and the intensity of your exercise, you will be doing either aerobic or anaerobic exercise. What are these two types of exercise? How can you tell if you are doing aerobic or anaerobic exercise? What are the benefits of each kind of exercise? Write a report that answers these questions. End your report by describing the kinds of exercises that you regularly do, and classify them as aerobic or anaerobic types of exercise.

Be sure to includethe characteristics with a short explanation of each IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Be neatand creative with this assignment! Your grade will be based on the quality ofthe presentation.

       

      1. Exercising on a budget: It's nice to have access to expensive exercise equipment and facilities. But what if you don't have the money to buy equipment or a club membership? The truth is that you can design a great exercise program with nothing more than desire, simple clothing and a good pair of exercise shoes. Do some research on types of exercise that you can do for free with no necessary equipment. Then design a low-cost exercise plan for yourself.

       

      1. I have to have this!: Is there a piece of exercise equipment or an accessory that you are considering buying? Before you run to the store, do some research on this item. What is it, and how do you think it will benefit you? How do you envision yourself using this piece of equipment? What are the benefits and drawbacks of purchasing this item? What feedback have you heard from other people or the media regarding this equipment? Write a report that answers these questions. End your report by stating whether you plan to make the purchase or not and on what you based your final decision.

       

      1. Staying motivated: It's great to design a great fitness plan for yourself, but if you can't stay motivated to do it, you will probably lose interest and stop. What are some ways to stay motivated when following an exercise plan? Write a report that describes a number of ways to stay motivated when exercising. End your report by expressing which of these methods would work best for you.

       

      1. Body Type: Compare and contrast the 3 variations of endomorph (fat), mesomorph (muscular) and ectomorph (thin). What are your particular capabilities and limitations based upon the functions of these body types? What are some activities appropriate for you? What do you need to do in order to overcome any physical challenges and obstacles you face, and to acquire the confidence needed to progress further and to take on further challenges?

       

       

      1. Jack LaLanne: Jack LaLanne is considered by many to be the "Father of Fitness". He started weight training in the 1930's, long before it was a popular fitness activity. By working very hard on his fitness and nutrition, LaLanne achieved amazing health, and has been able to perform incredible feats of strength throughout his life. LaLanne is now in his 90's, and still has the health and fitness level of a young man. Write a biography that describes the highlights of LaLanne's life, his accomplishments, and his philosophy about leading a healthy life.

       

      1. An athlete or fitness expert of your choice: There are thousands of athletes who have achieved amazing goals in their sports. Choose one athlete or fitness expert that is of particular interest to you. Write a biography that describes the highlights of the person's life, the obstacles that he/she overcame, and his/her achievements. Remember that since this is a P.E. course, your report must include information about how this person trained to achieve his/her goals.

      Category 3: Health and Fitness in Our Society

       

      1. A sport of your choice: Is there a sport or fitness activity that you enjoy and regularly participate in? You have the option of writing a report on this activity. What is the activity? What is the history of this activity? What equipment or skills are necessary to play or participate? What are the benefits of this activity? What drawbacks are there to participating in this activity? How can this activity improve your overall fitness level? Write a report that answers these questions.

       

      1. Obesity in the USA: Today, even with easy access to exercise equipment, health clubs and healthy food, Americans are more overweight than ever. Why? It has a lot to do with our day-to-day fitness habits and eating habits. What is causing this epidemic of obesity in the United States? And what can someone do to change his/her eating habits and/or fitness habits to help lose weight? Write a report that answers these questions.

       

      1. Eating disorders: Eating disorders are surprisingly common diseases in our country. People who have these diseases purposely eat very little or binge and purge themselves in order to maintain an "acceptable" body image. Write a report on two common eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Describe what these disorders are, warning signs that someone has an eating disorder, and what can be done to help treat people with eating disorders.

       

      1. Physical education in other cultures: Research and analyze how various cultures view physical education today. What are the trends? What are the popular sports, games and activities? How does physical education help improve the health of society in general?

       

      1. Appreciation of physical activity: How does your participation in group sports and activities help you understand your responsibility for your health and physical well-being and a life-long appreciation of physical activity?       Category 4: Human Growth, Development and Physiology

       

      1. Your family health history: Talk to your parents or other relatives about your family's health history. Which diseases has your family struggled with (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, etc.)? Identify 1 or 2 diseases that run in your family, and write a report describing what the disease is, and ways that you can help prevent the disease now and as you get older.

       

      1. The benefits of exercise: The benefits of exercise are so numerous that entire books have been written on the subject. You only have to write one page! What are some benefits of exercise? Write a report that describes some of the benefits. End your report by describing which of these benefits are most important to you.

       

      1. How much exercise do you really need?: It has been proven that exercising regularly will help you live a longer and healthier life. But you need to exercise for hours each day to achieve this kind of health, right?...wrong! Surprisingly, the amount of exercise that you need to achieve optimum health is reachable for almost everyone. How much exercise do you need to reap the benefits from it? What counts as "exercise"? Write a report that answers these questions, as well as a description of some of the research that supports these findings.

       

      1. Sleep: Everyone knows that to be healthy, everyone needs a good night's sleep. But why is sleep so important? And how much sleep is enough? What can people do to help them fall asleep quickly and sleep soundly? Write a report that answers these questions.

       

      1. Your heart rate: Knowing how to measure and interpret your heart rate is a simple and effective way to measure your overall health. How do you measure your heart rate? When should you measure your resting heart rate? What is considered a healthy resting heart rate? How can you calculate your maximum heart rate? What is a good range for heart rate to maintain when you are exercising? If your resting heart rate is too high, what are some ways that you can lower it? Write a report that answers these questions. End your report by stating your resting heart rate, your maximum heart rate, and a good range for your heart rate while you exercise.

       

      1. Do some research and write a report that shows both sides of this issue. End your report by expressing your opinion about this topic.

       

      1. What should you eat and drink when you exercise? By eating and drinking the right things before, during and after you exercise, you can increase your performance and your benefits. If you eat or drink the wrong things (or don't eat or drink at all), you can turn a workout into a terrible experience. What should you eat and drink before, during and after a workout to maximize your performance? Write a report that answers this question.

      1. Which activities are best for you? Compare and contrast 3-4 different fitness activities (e.g. running, walking, cycling, swimming playing basketball, playing soccer, weight training, etc.). How effective is each activity in burning calories? How much of a risk of injury is there? What equipment do you need to have? How much do you enjoy each activity? Your report should contain detailed information on each of these activities. You should end your report by stating which activity or activities are best for you and why.

       

      1. Stay home or go to the club? Where should you work out? Some people love the convenience of exercising at home, while others prefer the equipment, community and other benefits that a health club can offer? What are the benefits and drawbacks of working out at home? What are the benefits and drawbacks of working out at a health club? Write a report that answers these questions. End your report by expressing if you would prefer exercising at home or at a health club.
